Fourth Generation Networks Essay Example

Fourth Generation Networks Essay Example Fourth Generation Networks Essay Fourth Generation Networks Essay Name: Course: Instructor: Date: : Fourth Generation Networks The evolution of the cellular networks has undergone rapid changes because of the advancements in information technology that people never thought were possible. Over the past two decades, there have been technological advancements at unimaginable paces due to the growth in ideas and globalization. People from all over the world have been involved in growth of technology by competing with others to develop identical products that have seen favor in the eyes of the consumers and public. New products such as the touch screen mobile phones that were not in existence over the past decade are now en vogue with almost every individual in countries around the world owning one or planning to buy one creating a huge demand for such gadgets (Adibi et al, 34). More mobile phones are being developed with enhanced speeds that can be able to stream videos at unimaginable speeds. This can be attributed to the development of new bandwidths such as the Third generation networks (3G) and the Fourth Generation (4G). The evolution of the 3G networks into the 4G network can be attributed to the advancements in technology that have aided in the development of new networks. As an individual, the use of electronic gadgets that rely on new generation networks for transmission of information such as mobile phones, laptops, personal computers, tablets and android mobile phones, has been fun and exhilarating. On is able to stream videos form the internet in an instant. In addition, you are able to send videos and other multimedia messages at fast and unimaginable speeds that have never been experienced before. The fourth generation is exceptional as it provides the mobile users with exceptional and fast internet speeds. Business as well have been able to take advantage of the use of the new generation of networks that allows them to coordinate plans and strategies that are vital for the success of the business between different branches of a business some of which are thousands of miles apart. The new networks developed have enabled video conferencing by companies. This has the benefit of reducing costs such as traveling and other expenses that would have been used in traveling from one location to another for meetings. The use of teleconferencing enables people to communicate on a live basis while viewing each other on a screen maybe thousands of miles apart. The fourth generation networks have opened up new businesses that were not in existence. Technological advancements have enabled development of new products that only use the fourth generation networks. Gadgets such as the screen sensitive phones and tablets have become a common scene in the public domain because of their high demand due to their high speeds and numerous entertainment capabilities (Makaya Pierre, 22). Increased demand in products that use fourth generation networks has resulted in increased job opportunities. Development of new networks might eventually lead to new technologies that are superior to the existent fourth generation networks. Moreover the fourth generation networks has been a source of revenue to governments due to increased usage of data and revenues for companies dealing in the business of selling data (Hey, Tansley Tolle, 18). Thus with such revenues accrued to governments they are able to initiate development projects and further the growth of the networks into remote areas. Fourth generation networks have led to globalization of the world such that it is relatively easy to coordinate business and communicate with people around the world. Businesses have grown because of globalization such that it is relatively easy to coordinate and delegate duties within a global organization with presence in different parts of the world. African Americans in Vietnam W essays

African Americans in Vietnam W essays Fighting on Two Fronts: African Americans and the Vietnam War, begins by briefly looking at how previous wars such as the American Revolution, WWI, WWII, and the Korean War dealt with race relations in comparison to the Vietnam War. Earlier wars had a segregated system that limited the contact between white and black soldiers, and it was not until the Vietnam War when soldiers were fully integrated. In a chronological order beginning with the draft and ending with the soldiers returning home, Westheider examined how full integration brought about many problems for the US military. Prior to writing about racial discrimination in the Vietnam War, Westheider collected enormous amounts of data that ranged from official government documents to journal entries from soldiers. Over nine hundred personal interviews from white and black soldiers of varying ranks helped ensure the accuracy of his reports. The extent of racial conflicts depended on many things including the setting, the per sonnel, and the timing of military events. Despite the sensitivity of racial issues Westheider remained objective and allowed the reader to form their own opinions about the US military and their handling of racism against African Americans in the Vietnam War. Beginning with the draft, the reader is overwhelmed by the enormous amount of statistical data. Westheider discusses in a chapter what could have been best explained with a series of graphs. Earlier chapters focus on numbers while later chapters add a human element to the Vietnam experience. The draft and recruitment requirements were said to favor the middle and upper class which meant, African Americans were being drafted in disproportionately high numbers because of their lower social and economic standing. It would be useful if the reader knew what percent of Americans were eligible for service, which would put the number of black recruits in perspective. Westheider assumes...

Holy Wear Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Holy Wear - Essay Example ated places that the believers in the faith consider as sacred, such as Gaya in Buddhism, Kasi in Hindu religion, Mecca and Medina in Islam and Jerusalem in Christianity. Conventional philosophy believes that sacred or holy things exude â€Å"potent meanings and significances† to believers and the presence of such things offers some â€Å"inherent benefits† (23). On the other hand, the postmodern view on the sacred deviate drastically from the traditional view, which contends that the meanings to the holy are not inherent but attributed by the believers as an outcome of their â€Å"cultural practice† (23). It, therefore, transpires that illogical or irrational notions such as sacred derive from communal and social practices of certain dominant cultures like Greek civilization as well as the customs being followed within various religions. My photographic project called â€Å"Holy Wear† incorporates the philosophy of Roland Barthes, which identifies culture as the â€Å"contract arrived at† between the creators of art and its consumers (Barthes 1981:27). In this context, the photograph of the monk illustrates the Lama culture and imbibes in the viewers a sense of holyness in his attire, which represents sacredness for the believers in Buddhist religion. Thus, irrespective of logic or rationality, the audience of the photo associate holynesss to the clothes worn by the monk because the cultural practices have informed them that the attire of the monk is a â€Å"Holy Wear.† Similarly, the attire and appearance of the Hindu saint will inspire awe and a sense of holiness in people practicing Hindu religion or those who understand various cultural nuances relating to that religion. Therefore, it can be construed that the emotions and sensations that these photographs emulate derive not from any logic o r rational appreciation of the meaning of sacred or holy but due to the association of the images to various cultural practices. The photographs also validate Barthes’

It is believed that English being the second language for Saudi students, it requires more planned and organized textbook for learning. Decision to give 75 students the textbook of Cutting Edge for English learning is made to experiment for six months. The problem identified for research of this study is to find out the suitability of the Cutting Edge textbook to the cadets selected for experimenting English learning with it 1.3 Research question â€Å"Is Cutting Edge Text Book suitable for Saudi Cadets?† 1.4 The purpose of study The purpose of this study is to understand the importance of English language in daily life and what are the reasons for its significance. It is also aimed in this study to learn about the various materials and techniques used in the Cutting Edge textbook. The audience addressed by the Cutting Edge textbook, the exercises used and places where it is implemented successfully are included in the purpose of research. The main objective is to evaluate the contents of the Cutting Edge textbook and find the extent of its suitability for the Saudi cadets. 1.5 Thesis Structure This section gives a structure of every chapter... The intention of this study is education as the process of learning. There are two ways in which learning takes place. The first way is by observation and experience. The most common example of learning by observation and experience is that of an infant baby who when comes in this world has very little knowledge about the way things need to be done. As the time passes by, the baby begins to recognize his parents, demand milk by crying, and struggle to do what other people do around him. First sit up, and then walk and then talk, this entire learning takes place only through experience and observation of parents and baby’s surroundings. The second way is through academic education in which there is a teacher, textbooks, other tools and the student. Student acquires the knowledge by listening and understanding the lectures of the teacher, reading the textbooks and other course materials. Education generally refers to this second way of learning. Every human being has an intellec t that helps him to think and understand anything around him. However, understanding requires knowledge. The only way of acquiring knowledge is through the process of learning either by experience and observation or by education. Knowledge helps a person to understand the creations of God and science helps in accepting it through reasoning and experimenting. The source of knowledge is God and therefore it is infinite. Man only struggle to search and acquire knowledge to get benefits out of it. The human capacities of knowledge are developed by education which is a creative and continuous process.

The target of the audience for our research is the college students in Tunku Abdul Rahman University College. There are many faculties in the college like Faculty of Applied Sciences and Computing, Faculty of Accountancy, Finance Business, Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment. The audience we are researching is on the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Computing, Faculty of Accountancy Business, Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment. The student age in Tunku Abdul Rahman University College we have research on is 18 to 26. The number of students we have targeted on is 50 students. There are 25 boys and 25 girls who have completed our research. Mostly of the students has watched the Maze Runner. LITERATURE REVIEW Media effect have been be doing research in 1940, that is a year before the time of television. Researchers show the image of national multiple voting. While the interviewer need to investigate the opinion or behaviour of a group of people by asking them question and that are is it the press and radio will influence public option for the forthcoming vote. The two step flow theory is a process of impacting the people. It is talk about the mass media influence the people and it will continuous affect people such as opinion leader will influence opinion follower. The characteristic of opinion leader mostly are active in social , they like to communicate with other and easy-going. At the same time, opinion follower will collect their knowledge. So actually this is a cyclic process. The next theory is Agenda setting , it is a theory that to cause the public have knowledge and also must relate to the main point of the collective of newspaper and magazines. And it is not bring the real message to us but it achieve to make us know what it really bring the message that almost close to us. Spiral of silence is discuss the overall opinion that is not supportive when the public intend to know they are only a smallest part in the whole. They not dare to provide their feeling and though, they prefer to keep their mouth shut and media will make them unable to speak. If one point are given that mean other one will vanish. This theory can define that people can absorb the fresh things and can improve the quality of themselves just by see the manner of people. RESEARCH There are two types of method use to get answers for the research such as survey in quantitative method and interviews in qualitative methods. We have used quantitative method in our research. Quantitative method is where people pass out surveys form to the people to fill in and this method can help calculate the percentage on how many people have respond to the question given in the survey forms. This method can help people who are researching for answers easier. That is why we used quantitative research because students would mostly fill in survey forms. We have collected data from the students of Tunku Abdul Rahman University College and we distribute our survey form in the library of the college. Discussion and Analysis Essay

Construct a good, solid essay of at least 3 full pages which answers one of the prompts below. In addition to consulting your lecture notes and textbook, you may find it helpful to consult the New Cambridge Medieval History, Vol. I, which may be found in the Walsh Library Reference Room, call number D117. N48. Essays will be graded on content (clarity and coherence) as well as mechanics (grammar and spelling). Late papers will be significantly penalized and any paper later than 24 hours will NOT be accepted. Drafts of papers are to be submitted as hard (printed) copies to both  your editing partner and me. Final versions of papers are to be submitted as hard (printed) copies to me; you will also  include  the marked-up version of your draft. All papers must have 1† margins, be double spaced, and in Times New Roman or Garamond, size 10-12 font. Do not double-space your initial, first page heading. In supporting your observations, you will certainly need to point to specifics in the texts. However, you should not rely on direct quotations and should use them very sparingly. You may not use any quote lengthier than two sentences. No block quotations. Any essay that consists of more than one-quarter direct quotations will receive a D. You should learn how to sum up examples in your own words, but be aware that changing only a few words of someone else is still considered plagiarism. Any time you use a direct quotation or paraphrase something, you need to cite the material. This includes anything from the Chronicle text. For this second essay, your goal is to analytically read primary source materials. As you read and begin to formulate your essay, consider some of the following questions: who is this author? Why are they writing? What is the obvious, surface purpose of this document? Is there a purpose or conclusion that the author reaches which is not so obvious? What fundamental assumptions does the author have about his subject material? How do these assumptions influence or appear in the work, either explicitly or implicitly? How do the attitudes or perceptions of the subject matter change or evolve over time? How does the historical context of each author influence his approach and treatment of his subject matter? These questions should be only the beginning of your inquiry and you certainly are not restricted to them. Use them to formulate your own questions, and then use those questions to help you structure your essay. Often the best essays are built around thesis questions, not thesis statements. Primary source excerpts can be found in your Rosenwein reader or online at the Fordham Medieval Sourcebook and google books. This is a 3 page paper; obviously you cannot use all the sources, however what you choose should make sense for your thesis. The Crusades Tactic I Using the documents listed below, explore what motivated people to go on crusade to the Holy Land in the middle ages. Did their experiences match their expectations? Were they fulfilled, disappointed? How important was morale and how was it kept up? Address strengths and weaknesses of the source material and be sure to make connections between the sources. Tactic II Using the documents listed below, explore what we can learn about memory and different groups’ interpretation of events. Address strengths and weaknesses of the source material and be sure to make connections between the sources.

Advantage And Disadvantage Of CCTV

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) is a camera which is used to produce images or recordings for surveillance purposes. CCTV can be either video cameras, or digital stills cameras. Video cameras are either analogue or digital, which means that they work on the basis of sending analogue or digital signals to a storage device such as a video tape recorder or desktop computer or laptop computer wherelse digital stills cameras can take excellent pictures in most situations and can be plugged into the USB port of any computer and pictures can be taken of any camera scene. The name of the CCTV camera’s inventor is Marie Van Brittan Brown. CCTV is usually installed in areas that may need monitoring such as banks, casinos, airports, military installations, and convenience stores. In this days and age, it is critical to take security seriously. Some people think that only businesses and commercial properties need good security, but it is not only that our homes need good security too. Wit h the rapid increase of crime rates and breaking and entering, it is very important to mull over the available security options and choose one that is the best fit for us.Therefore using CCTV cameras and equipment is one of the most popular and cost effective ways of providing security in the home and place of work. The reason why CCTV cameras is used because it can act as a very successful deterrent to thieves and burglars, certainly making them think twice at the very least. The technology these days have made our work much easier. For example, it is even possible to hook the cameras up to an ordinary television or computer to watch the footage. In this report we are going to discuss on the pros and corns of a CCTV camera system.BODY:The use of CCTV (close circuit television) cameras in streets, stations, shops and other public places has increased rapidly in recent years. I completely agree with the statement above. We can’t overlook at the importance of CCTV in our daily lives. Indirectly CCTV makes our lives much easier because it protects the public, buildings and vehicles. One of the importance of CCTV are to prevent crime. All of us are worried about crime. CCTV cameras can not only catch criminals in the act, but the existence of CCTV systems can make a would-be criminal think twice beforecommitting any wrong-doing. There are many different types of crimes, including from crimes against persons to victimless crimes and also violent crimes to white collar crimes. Crimes against persons are also called personal crimes. For example, murder, forced attack, rape, and robbery. Next is a victimless crime. It is an offense that lacks an exclusive victim who is the object of the crime. This offense is usually against society itself through norms, values, attitudes, and beliefs. For example when someone smokes or uses cocaine they are going against cultural values about apposite behavior. They are eventually committing a crime, but there is no direct vict im, as there is when someone is robbed or murdered. Other example includes prostitution, illegal gambling, and illegal drug. White-collar crimes are crimes committed by people of high social status. For example, stealing money from one’s employer, insider trading and tax evasion. All this kind of crimes can be prevented by using a CCTV camera. There were some researchers conducted on the use of CCTV cameras and they found that surveillance systems were most effective in parking lots. The use of CCTV cameras resulted in a 51% decrease in crime As we all know CCTV cameras helps in preventing crime. Besides preventing crime CCTV cameras have other functions too which are beneficial to us. CCTV cameras can be used as a useful piece of evidence in lawsuits. In legal cases of robbery and other forms of crime, videos and images provided by the CCTV camera system can serve as a valid proof and evidence against the defaulter. To be more specific if a crime is committed around us and the person accused of committing the crime was caught on camera, we will have an extra and strong piece of evidence for a court case. To confirm that the person accused did indeed commit the crime, jurors and judges can watch footage or view photos that was recorded and captured from the security cameras. By doing so not only will we be preventing the same person from causing us more trouble in the future, but we'll be helping out our entire community. Eventually, this useful piece of evidence by the CCTV camera can help law enforcement to solve crime.Whenever someone is caught on CCTV camera committing a crime, police and other law enforcement officials resembling customs officers, probation officers, immigration officers, and corrections officers can use the footage to release video or photos to the public via various media outlets like newspapers, magazines and internet. Many of us don’t realize that having a picture of the suspect can make a world of difference when it comes to making an arrest and getting dangerous criminal off the street. Besides those that was stated above, with the use of CCTV camera we are able to keep an eye on children, elderly folks and things. Many of us are too busy out there that we are not aware of what is going on at home. With a CCTV system at home, we will be able to monitor the safety of children and elderly folks while we are away. More to the point, we can also keep an eye on maid and make sure nothing out of the ordinary is going on. That is if we were to keep track on what’s happening at home. What if it’s about work? If we can't be at the office all the time but like to know what's going on, installing a security camera can help do just that.We can keep an eye on things from our home computer with a few quick clicks of your mouse and at the same time we can make sure our work related matter is running smoothly and nothing out of the ordinary is going on. If we have our own business and staff working un der us, CCTV is the best equipment that can protect our staff physically against violence from customers. At the same time, it can also protect them against false accusations that perhaps may be coming from colleagues or even from client and customers. It is also helpful to keep track on the activities of the staff. Although we are told that a CCTV camera help in the fight against crime and has many benefits, however some people are opposed to their use. They believe that everyone has a right to privacy. As we all know where there is good there is bad also. Invasion of privacy is the major issue that everyone would bring up when it comes to any security system device like the CCTV camera system. The role of CCTV cameras is to constantly monitor the activities of people working and living in a location. This actuality alone upsets people, mainly because many of us simply don't like our privacy being marched into. We don’t look at the reason why the CCTV equipment is there. For e xample, when a CCTV camera is installed at a work place all the activities that are done by the employees are being recorded. Basically, it lowers the employee self-esteem and hampers productivity at times. Employees may feel ill at ease due to the constant monitoring of every activity. Besides that, hacking is one of the issues that is related to privacy. The value of CCTV information has increased as the value of shares in market. This results in a higher risk from hackers. Hacking CCTV footage has led to privacy issues. The most common issues and are happening often among our community are images captured by CCTV of naked women distributed across the Internet. Complete protection of public security systems from hackers is definitely not possible. The reason is because the system connects to a network, therefore hackers can hack into the system virtually from outside locations easily.Another example is if there is a CCTV camera installed near an ATM machine, hackers can easily hack the video of that camera and can easily get the pin code and any other information about a customer or ATM user which he wants. Therefore, installing a CCTV camera in the wrong place could lead to a privacy violation. Property managers should play their role by being sure they're not acquiring any legal risks before setting up CCTV equipment. Besides those disadvantages that were mentioned above there is another disadvantage of CCTV camera. Not everyone can afford to get it because the price range of CCTV camera is from RM1,500 (the cheapest) to RM10 000 and more depending on the brand. The initial cost per camera is high. Moreover the installation of CCTV camera may also increase the initial expenditure depending upon the complexity of the CCTV camera system as well. For example, if a property manager or owner is taking into account to equip a whole building with ample amount of surveillance equipment, then he's looking at quite a bulky bill. Not only that, once CCTV cameras are bou ght they must also be installed correctly by experts and monitored regularly, which eventually drives the cost up. Another disadvantage of CCTV camera system is that they can only monitor a limited area not every area of your office or home at all times. So many people don’t consider it as a foolproof method for crime prevention. Usually most CCTV cameras are installed out of the reach of humans, but sometimes a camera can still get damaged. Criminals who have intention to rob or do crime can vandalize the cameras in various ways, such as sticking gum or spraying something on the lens. With that the CCTV camera will not be able to monitor any wrong doing of theirs. Besides sticking gum and spraying, they may even be able to change the angle of the camera. As we all know technology are evolving all of the time. The same goes for CCTV systems. When older models are replaced by new systems, the result is often a mix of both modern and old cameras, and this can lead to incompatibi lities between systems. Older cameras might also produce low-quality footage that might not be accepted by a court as evidence if continued to be used for long.Other than that, the camera might miss details. For example, a covered weapon which is not immediately visible on a person might not show up on CCTV footage and a CCTV camera might not catch all activity due to its position. CCTV cameras can be sensitive to hostile weather and so are generally installed in sheltered or indoor locations. Lastly, CCTV equipment is sensitive to knocks and can malfunction if interfered with in this way. Therefore, the process of monitoring can be interrupted.CONCLUSION:In a nutshell, CCTV camera has its own pros and corns.  Some people agree that these cameras help in the fight against crime, but not all the five fingers are the same. However some people are opposed to their use because they believe that everyone has a right to privacy. I personally feel that CCTV cameras should be installed in most of the places to decrease the crime rate that is increasing rapidly in our country. One strong reason to support my opinion is despite all these disadvantages CCTV camera still allows us to secure our place to a great deal. I agree that it has disadvantages but we all know nothing is perfect. The disadvantage can be solved by using different methods. These days CCTV cameras are becoming increasingly affordable to install. In order to install CCTV surveillance systems it is a one-time expense. It is better to install a CCTV camera instead of hiring multiple security officers to monitor several different areas of your establishment or town. A handful of officers can practically â€Å"patrol† an area from a comfort that monitors a wide area, reducing manpower costs to provide the same level of security. I would like to stress that CCTV camera is very useful equipment and its advantage outweigh the disadvantage. Advantage And Disadvantage Of CCTV Closed-circuit television (CCTV) is a camera which is used to produce images or recordings for surveillance purposes. In this report we are going to discuss on the pros and corns of a CCTV camera system. BODY:The use of CCTV (close circuit television) cameras in streets, stations, shops and other public places has increased rapidly in recent years. I completely agree with the statement above. We can’t overlook at the importance of CCTV in our daily lives. Indirectly CCTV makes our lives much easier because it protects the public, buildings and vehicles. One of the importance of CCTV are to prevent crime. All of us are worried about crime. CCTV cameras can not only catch criminals in the act, but the existence of CCTV systems can make a would-be criminal think twice before  committing any wrong-doing. They are eventually committing a crime, but there is no direct victim, as there is when someone is robbed or murdered. Many of us don’t realize that having a picture of the suspect can make a world of difference when it c omes to making an arrest and getting dangerous criminal off the street. If we have our own business and staff workin g under us, CCTV is the best equipment that can protect our staff physically against violence from customers. F or example, when a CCTV camera is installed at a work place all the activities that are done by the employees are being recorded. Not only that, once CCTV cameras are bought they must also be installed correctly by experts and monitored regularly, which eventually drives the cost up. When older models are replaced by new systems, the result is often a mix of both modern and old cameras, and this can lead to incompa tibilities between systems. Therefore, the process of monitoring can be interrupted. CONCLUSION: In a nutshell, CCTV camera has its own pros and corns. An Essay on Loss of Self versus Escape from Self in Suicide Essays

An Essay on Loss of Self versus Escape from Self in Suicide Essays Suicidology Online 2013; 4:16-20. ISSN 2078-5488 16 Essay An Essay on Loss of Self versus Escape from Self in Suicide: Illustrative Cases from Diaries left by those who died by Suicide David Lester The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, USA Submitted to SOL: 16th August 2012; accepted: 24th December 2013; published: 11th April 2013 Abstract: Michael Chandler (1994) has described how suicide can result from a loss of a sense of self, while Roy Baumeister (1990) has described how suicide can be an attempt to escape from the self. Their published theories are presented in a very abstract manner, and the present essay presents examples from two individuals who died by suicide who expressed these themes in their diaries. Loss of a sense of self is illustrated by the diary of an 18-year-old, and escape from self is illustrated by the diary of a professor, both of whom died by suicide. Keywords: Loss of Self, Suicide, Case Study Copyrights belong to the Author(s). Suicidology Online (SOL) is a peer-reviewed open-access journal publishing under the Creative Commons Licence 3.0. * IIIt is difficult to understand why individuals take their own life. There are risk factors and warning signs, but none of these appear to be necessary or sufficient conditions for suicide to occur. In an effort to understand suicide rather than explain it, I have been fortunate to obtain the diaries of individuals who have died by suicide. For example, in one case, I recruited colleagues to read the diary of a young woman who died by suicide and to present their insights gained from the diary (Lester, 2004). I have found that diaries provide a rich source of * David Lester, Ph.D. Distinguished Professor of Psychology The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey Galloway, NJ 08205-9441 USA Tel: +1 609-652-4254 Email: [emailprotected] information about the person that goes far beyond the brief suicide notes that some leave. The present essay was stimulated by two competing ideas, namely that suicide can result from a loss of self or as an escape from the self, and I realized that two of the diaries in my possession illustrated these two themes. The articles (by Michael Chandler [1994] and by Roy Baumeister [1990]) describing these two themes present the ideas in a very abstract manner, and the reader is left wondering how the themes manifest themselves in suicidal people. The following cases provide concrete examples of these abstract ideas. Loss of Self In a series of essays, Chandler has proposed that suicide, especially in adolescents, can occur as a result of the loss of self (Chandler, 1994; Ball & Suicidology Online 2013; 4:16-20. ISSN 2078-5488 17 Chandler, 1989; Chandler & Proulx, 2006). At the most abstract level, Chandler noted that, when selforganizing systems try to restructure themselves, typically as an upgrade to a higher and more differentiated level or organization, there can be a system failure. The individuals find themselves bereft of their previous construction of their self as persistent and continuous through time. They lose ownership of their past and any commitment to their own future. At that point, self-destructive behavior loses personal significance and becomes more available as a solution to current problems. If one is stripped of a persistent sense of identity, then one has no investment in ones future well-being. Chandler noted two tasks involved in achieving a stable sense to selfhood. First, from a cross-sectional perspective, one task is to understanding how the different competing facets of oneself that are often in conflict, are part of a unified self. Second, the sequential dimension requires that one view the current self as a development of previous selves so that one has a sense of continuity over time. Chandler described five possibilities: 1. For the pre-adolescent, the self is viewed as a figural collection of mosaic of parts, and change is discounted. The events in one life are seen as isolated, and the person turns a blind eye to change. 2. For the 12-16 year-old, the self is viewed a multifaceted topologic structure, and change is denied. There may be a good side and a bad side to the individual, or a shy side and a more forward side, but any conflict here is denied. 3. Later, the person adopts the view that there is an essential unchanging core to the self, and change is trivialized or finessed. However, this core self may be viewed as unknowable and comes to be treated as a kind of indwelling spirit or ghost in the machine (p. 382). 4. Then, functional and narrative strategies stitch together the multiple episodes of ones life (p. 382). In this functional strategy, the individual realizes that earlier events caused the present state. In the narrative strategy, the person rereads and re-edits the past in the light

Free Essays on New England Vs. Chesapeake

People from England settled both in the New England region and the Chesapeake region, yet the two regions became very different and independent from one another. You would think that since they were basically the same people that the colonies would be similar but they were far from it. The people settling New England were fleeing England’s religious persecution, it was a refuge for religious separatists leaving England, and was composed of many close and religious towns with large families. The Chesapeake region; however, was composed mainly by the aristocratic men of England who wanted wealth more than anything. These were widely spread out with small families, who spent most of their time obtaining wealth. In this essay I will explain how each region began and discuss the democratic differences in each region. John Winthrop, the leader of the Puritans in New England, states that the colonies goal was to form â€Å"a city upon a hill†, which is like saying a â€Å"pure† community, where Christianity would be pursued in the most correct manner. Puritans believed that church and government should work together to promote holiness and help people succeed both materially and spiritually. The local government was controlled by the same people who controlled the church and the bible was the basis for all the laws and regulations. From the Article of Agreement, Springfield, Massachusetts it is clear that religion was the basis for general laws. It uses the phrase, â€Å"being by God’s providence engaged together to make a plantation† showing that everything was done by God’s work. John Winthrop wanted the New England colony to become the model for the rest of the world, to work together and create a utopian society â€Å"so shall we keep the unity of the s pirit in the bond of peace†¦ we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill.† The government for the colonists in New England was theocracy, which is controlled by... Political and Symbolic Deaths, Struggles for Meaning and Survival Assignment

Political and Symbolic Deaths, Struggles for Meaning and Survival - Assignment Example The film depicts situational irony, wherein because of death anxiety, people want to assert life-affirming ideologies, and yet the more that they do so, the more that they end up hurting others and themselves when one of the best ways to handle it is to simply live and co-exist. Death anxiety shows that one of the greatest ironies in life is that the more people want to preserve life, the more they hurt others to do so. Some people become inhumane because of death anxiety, and they exhibit this through prejudice and discrimination (Flight from Death). Associate Professor of Social Work at Illinois State University Daniel Liechty asserts that to fight death anxiety, â€Å"One of easiest ways to make [people] feel more than mortal is to stand as the conqueror of someone else, so there’s this†¦tendency†¦to want to lift [themselves] up by elbowing people down† (Flight from Death). Prejudice and discrimination help people feel better and secure with their lives by believing that they are superior to others. McHugh shows the discrimination of the speaker of the poem against Germans: â€Å"where it must have been abandoned by/the German visitor (was there a bus of them?)†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (27-28). ... Flight from Death emphasizes that when people fear death, they tend to overgeneralize people. Jeff Greenberg, Psychology Professor of the University of Arizona, notes that after 9/11, a number of people are so deeply disturbed of being reminded of their death that they killed a man wearing a turban when he was an Indian Sikh (Flight from Death). He stresses that because of the heightened reminder of death, several people resort to scapegoating and generalization (Flight from Death). The makkoli vendor in Krukowski’s story detests the generalization. In the end, he does something symbolic: â€Å"[He] pours the white liquid into a paper cup, eyes locked with ours. Still smiling, he pours it on the ground† (Krukowski 9). The action signifies that he does not care what he is selling because his occupation does not define his existence. When a group of people sees another as different, they fear death that come from clashing ideologies, so they denigrate the other as inferio r. Another way of hurting others is through competing with them in a rat race culture. Sheldon Solomon, a Professor of Social Psychology at Skidmore College, says that the American culture perpetuates death anxiety, even more through its various social expectations. He notes that it is not enough to be a person with integrity because they must also be rich, beautiful, famous, or extremely thin (Flight from Death). Otherwise, they are more likely to feel wanting in the world and more anxious about their mortality (Flight from Death). Krukowski exemplifies competitiveness in the real world that drives people’s fortunes: â€Å"Clue to the power of silent movies: Clara Bow’s career was ruined when sound revealed her heavy Brooklyn accent.

Cultural and Critical Perspectives of Rock-N-Roll Essay

Cultural and Critical Perspectives of Rock-N-Roll - Essay Example These mediums of expressions have in fact acted as a form of self realization, expression of resentment and extreme grievances meted out to these societies. Rock and Roll was highly influenced by its African origin and prevalent racial discrimination of blacks in America at the time. Though soul music and the early Rock and Roll music artists were popular and enjoyed by a large section of the African American community, it faced a grueling political apathy and hatred of so called civilized grown-up Americans. This hatred was often reflected in the early Rock and Roll music and it resurfaces even today in various performances though subtlety has taken precedents. This paper will explore the evolution of Rock and Rolls genre from the time of Blues or Rhythms and Blues and analyze how established record and broadcasting industry, the rise of rhythm and blues music and subsequently Rock and Roll were affected by racial indifferences of the society of that time. The paper will also discuss the various artists and piece of musical works that shaped Rock and Roll during the early 1950s and how they have shaped today's Rock and Roll. The fact that rock 'n' roll has its roots in a long slavery systems make it mandatory to know what slavery system was and how it could have been an origin of a popular music genre for understanding the impact of racism. Slavery system had left a generation of Africans who were not aware of their origin and even did not know much about American culture. The origin of Rock and Roll from slavery provides insight in the charm of the genre. Rock and roll is an African-American hybrid. It represents the transition or a desire of transition from the very suffering, and fight of survival out of generations of servitude to freedom of expression and soul as flouted by American white society. Rhythms of genre, use of extraordinary vocals and claps as a part of music, that indicate a strong linkage to African culture, provide a distinctive identity to Rock and Roll. Though the Rock and Roll can be culturally linked back to slavery, it adds a lot of elements local white American music. White America slowly discovered the endearing, inspiring musical heritage that had become central to African Americans' lives, and, establishing a tradition that is practiced to this day, began to imitate and adapt black music (Townsend, 1997). Origin of Rock and Roll is generally traced back to late 1940s and early 1950s. It has assimilated Blues, Country music, R&B, Folk music, and Gospel music styles of that time. Though the term Rock and Roll was first coined by Alan Freed in 1951 to describe a mixer of both black and white music, a similar kind of music style was already present in 1920s and 30's music form used by African community in America, which was generally categorized as race music or black music. The creation of first true Rock and Roll song is attributed to Joe Turner, a black blues artist, who sang, "Shake, Rattle, and Roll". Racial Discrimination During the heights of racial discrimination radio stations refused to play music by a black singers and parents advised their Childs not to listen this music. Schools were teaching the students against the evils of black music. One of the most important social teachings during the time was that
